A dental problem back in Estonia after treatment in Turkey: where to go

First: is it urgent?

This page does not diagnose or say whether your situation is dangerous. It helps you understand whom to contact in Estonia and what to bring.

Tervisekassa lists the conditions in which a patient needs urgent emergency dental care:

• dental trauma;
• extensive swelling in the face and jaw area;
• difficulty opening the mouth;
• inflammation from a difficult wisdom tooth eruption;
• wound inflammation after a tooth extraction;
• acute salivary gland disease;
• acute conditions of the jaw joint.

Emergency dental care in Estonia

According to Tervisekassa, all adults are entitled to free emergency dental care, whether or not they have health insurance. Care counts as an emergency when delaying or withholding it could cause death or permanent harm. The dentist decides whether that is the case.

Free emergency care is available only at providers that have a contract with Tervisekassa, because Tervisekassa pays only its contract partners. When you call, ask straight away whether the clinic is a contract partner.

Tervisekassa's list of emergency dental services includes examination, anaesthesia, tooth extraction, draining an abscess, stopping bleeding, X-rays, and removing a tooth or an implant. That does not mean a dentist in Estonia will replace work done in Turkey for free. Emergency care removes the acute danger. A new crown or implant is ordinary paid treatment.

Not every situation that needs first aid is emergency care. According to Tervisekassa, other cases are paid services agreed with the dentist. If it is not urgent

A loose temporary crown, an uncomfortable bite or a small chip in a veneer may not be an emergency, but still needs attention. A sensible order:

1. Write to the clinic. Describe what happened and when. Refer to the treatment plan or warranty document. Ask for a written reply.
2. See a dentist in Estonia. They can assess what they see and describe it in writing. That description is useful for the clinic as well.
3. Do not have the work redone before you have read the warranty terms. Under some warranties only the same clinic may repair the work. That is not a reason to put up with pain. If the dentist in Estonia has to act now, let them, and ask for a written summary.
4. Keep everything. Invoices, photos, letters and the Estonian dentist's summary.

According to the Oral Health Foundation, plaque building up around an implant can cause inflammation called peri-implantitis. It can bring red or swollen gums, bleeding, infection and loosening of the implant. If you notice something like this, do not wait for your next trip to Turkey. Get checked in Estonia and tell the clinic.

What a dentist in Estonia can and cannot do

A dentist in Estonia can examine you, take an X-ray if needed, relieve an acute problem and offer their own treatment. They are not obliged to continue another clinic's unfinished plan, use the same implant system, or give an opinion on who was at fault. If they do not know which system is in your mouth, a simple repair can turn complicated.

The UK dental regulator, the GDC, advises talking to your own dentist before going abroad for treatment, because they need to know your plans in case of later complications. If you did not do that, do it now. See also questions for your dentist in Estonia.

Which documents to bring

• the treatment plan and invoice listing the teeth and work done;
• implant brand, model and position, if the treatment included implants;
• the material of crowns, veneers or dentures;
• X-ray or CT images, if the clinic gave them to you;
• the warranty document and clinic contacts;
• your correspondence with the clinic after treatment.

Under Turkey's 2025 health tourism regulation, the facility must issue an invoice with a detailed breakdown of the services and unit prices. On the patient's request it must also provide, free of charge, a list of the medicines and materials the patient paid for, and the laboratory results and radiological images the patient paid for. Warranty and costs

A warranty is what is written down. Before you expect a free repair, read what the warranty covers, whether the problem must be shown at the same clinic, who pays for flights and hotel, and when the warranty lapses. Dental warranties from clinics in Turkey helps you read that text.

The GDC suggests asking before treatment who pays for extra flights, hotel and remedial work if you are unhappy with the result or complications arise. If there is no answer, you will probably pay. Factor that in when you compare offers.

What this means for you

An acute problem is dealt with in Estonia, straight away. The warranty question is dealt with in writing, calmly. If you keep these two apart, you do not have to choose between enduring pain and losing a warranty.
